It is more efficient and economic to produce steam at high pressures for delivery through the distribution system. This may mean that the pressure needs to be reduced for use in other parts of the system. A reliable method of providing high capacity pressure reduction, particularly for steam distribution at lower pressures or on branch lines to larger equipment, is to use a direct acting pressure reducing valve.

These valves are self acting - the downstream pressure signal moves the diaphragm against an adjustable spring, providing valve movement proportional to sensed pressure.
